Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) on Sunday described scrutiny of left-wing commentator Hasan Piker’s pro-Hamas remarks as an irrelevant distraction from broader political priorities ahead of the midterm elections.
Piker, a progressive political commentator and streamer, recently stated in an interview that he “would vote for Hamas over Israel every single time.” The remarks have drawn significant backlash, including from fellow Democrats, and raised questions about Piker’s influence within the party.
During an appearance on NBC News’s Meet the Press, host Kristen Welker played a clip of Piker’s comments and asked Raskin whether the Democratic Party’s tent was large enough to include the streamer. Raskin responded by questioning Piker’s affiliation with the party, noting that Piker had previously criticized him for campaigning with Democratic candidates in Michigan. “I don’t even know if Hasan Piker considers himself a Democrat,” Raskin said. “I think all of that is an irrelevant distraction.”
Raskin acknowledged that no one supports Hamas, calling the group a terrorist organization responsible for the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. However, he argued that the party’s focus should remain on broader policy debates rather than individual controversies. “Obviously, nobody supports Hamas, a terrorist organization which brutally attacked Israel on Oct. 7,” he said. “But people here also don’t support the policies of Bibi Netanyahu. But we’re not going to be able to work that out in the next 60 days.”
The remarks come as Democrats face internal divisions over Piker’s association with Abdul el-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s Senate race. El-Sayed has sought to distance himself from Piker, though the two remain linked due to their shared criticism of Israel. Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-MI) publicly distanced herself from el-Sayed over the association, withholding her endorsement of the candidate.
El-Sayed is running in November against former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers for Michigan’s open Senate seat. The race is one of several competitive contests in which Democrats are seeking to retake control of Congress. Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the House, while Democrats are targeting control of the Senate.
Raskin’s comments reflect a broader debate within the Democratic Party about the role of progressive voices and the boundaries of acceptable discourse. While some Democrats have condemned Piker’s remarks, others have defended his right to express controversial views. The controversy has also drawn attention to the influence of online personalities in shaping political narratives and the party’s electoral strategy.
The midterm elections are scheduled for November, with control of Congress hanging in the balance. Democrats are emphasizing issues such as abortion rights, economic policy, and former President Donald Trump’s role in the Republican Party, while Republicans are focusing on inflation, immigration, and national security.
