In a blog post published Sunday, Pachocki emphasized that no one is prepared for the consequences of a continued rapid rise in machine intelligence, despite OpenAI’s internal efforts to enhance safety controls.
Pachocki’s remarks follow OpenAI’s Thursday release of Astra, its newest AI model, which the company describes as its most aligned to date—meaning it has reduced proclivity to act unpredictably. However, Pachocki argued that broader interventions are required, including mandated safety standards enforced by third-party auditors, government agencies, or international bodies.
The scientist highlighted three primary risks posed by increasingly autonomous AI agents:
