Major automakers including Hyundai, Genesis, Ram, Jeep, Ford, and Volkswagen-backed Scout Motors have announced plans to introduce extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) by the end of 2028, according to reporting from multiple industry sources.
The vehicles combine electric motors with a gas-powered generator to extend range beyond typical battery limits. EREVs are designed to offer 120 to 150 miles of electric-only driving, followed by several hundred additional miles powered by gasoline. This approach aims to address concerns over charging infrastructure while retaining the performance and efficiency of electric propulsion.
How EREVs work
EREVs operate with wheels powered exclusively by electric motors, while a gas engine drives a generator to produce electricity once the battery is depleted. Unlike traditional hybrids, the gas engine does not directly propel the vehicle. This design allows owners to rely primarily on electric power for daily commutes while using gasoline for long trips or heavy loads, such as towing.
Industry rationale
Auto executives cite two key factors driving the shift toward EREVs. First, EV adoption has lagged expectations, with consumers hesitant to fully transition due to concerns about charging availability and range anxiety. Second, elevated gas prices have made long-distance travel in conventional EVs less practical, particularly for larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs.
Robby DeGraff, manager of product and consumer insights at AutoPacific, described EREVs as “the next generation of this stepping stone powertrain”, suggesting they could ease the transition to full electrification. Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of market research at Telematics International, added that EREVs align with American preferences for larger vehicles and the ongoing challenge of high fuel costs.
Target segments and market positioning
The first wave of EREVs is expected to focus on trucks and SUVs, segments where consumers prioritize range and utility. Scout Motors, a Volkswagen-backed startup, has already unveiled the Scout Terra pickup truck, positioning it as a potential leader in the EREV space. Other manufacturers have not yet disclosed specific models but have indicated plans to enter the segment within the next four years.
Potential challenges
Industry analysts highlight two primary concerns regarding EREVs. First, the added complexity of dual powertrains could confuse consumers and increase maintenance costs. Second, the premium pricing associated with advanced electric and hybrid systems may price out budget-conscious buyers, limiting mass-market appeal.
Despite these challenges, automakers view EREVs as a strategic compromise between consumer demand for electric driving and the practical limitations of current charging infrastructure. The success of these vehicles may hinge on their ability to deliver EV-like performance at a competitive price point while addressing range and refueling concerns.
