Ukrainian drones struck an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy, a key natural-gas producing region in Russia’s Arctic, on Wednesday, according to Russian officials and the Associated Press. Regional Governor Dmitry Artyukhov reported that Russian air defenses intercepted the attack, but falling debris ignited a fire at an unspecified industrial site. The extent of the damage remains under assessment.
A Ukrainian defense manufacturer, Fire Point, appeared to claim responsibility for the operation, stating on social media: “Guess who covered more than 3,300 km and successfully hit the target.”
The strike occurred as U.S. officials intensified diplomatic efforts to broker peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, following a weekend visit by U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv. No breakthrough was reported, and Russia resumed large-scale missile and drone attacks on Kyiv shortly after the envoys’ departure.
During a press briefing at Joint Base Andrews, former U.S. President Donald Trump said he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin and suggested both sides may be open to negotiations. “We had a great conversation. He is wanting to make a deal. And if Zelenskyy is wanting to make a deal, that would be very nice,” Trump stated. He attributed stalled talks to “personal animosity” between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling them “two people that hate each other.”
Ukraine has increasingly targeted deep into Russian territory in recent weeks, including a separate large-scale drone assault near Moscow involving more than 400 drones, described by officials as one of the war’s most significant attacks. Russia has not publicly linked the Novy Urengoy incident to Ukraine but has framed such strikes as provocations amid ongoing hostilities.
The Arctic gas region, centered in Novy Urengoy, is critical to Russia’s energy exports, supplying a significant portion of its natural gas production. The facility’s identity and the scale of disruption caused by the fire have not been confirmed by independent sources as of reporting time.
