The Atlanta Falcons' quarterback situation has become more uncertain after Tua Tagovailoa suffered an oblique strain during Thursday’s practice, leaving his status for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers in question.
Cooper Rush received first-team reps in the new offensive scheme under head coach Kevin Stefanski, while Tagovailoa was limited in practice. The injury occurred during the media-viewing portion of practice when Tagovailoa was observed touching his back and briefly sitting on the grass before leaving the drill.
Immediate Impact on Game Plan
The Falcons had named Tagovailoa their Week 1 starter, with Michael Penix Jr. expected to assume the role once fully recovered from a left ACL tear suffered last November. Penix, a rookie, has not yet played in an NFL game after being drafted in the first round this year. If both Tagovailoa and Penix are unavailable, Cooper Rush—who has 16 career starts—would likely start the season opener.
Tagovailoa’s availability remains day-to-day, according to team reports. Rush threw for 303 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions in two starts last season with the Baltimore Ravens. Jack Strand, an undrafted free agent signed this offseason, would serve as the backup if Rush starts.
Long-Term QB Uncertainty
The injury adds another layer to the Falcons’ quarterback debate, which has been a focal point of preseason discussions. Reports indicate the team signed Tagovailoa to a one-year, $1.21 million contract after the Miami Dolphins released him in March, with Miami still owing him $54 million minus any earnings in 2026.
Tagovailoa’s tenure with the Dolphins included a career-high 15 interceptions in 2023, contributing to Miami’s 7-10 record and their decision to move on from him. His performance with the Falcons this preseason has not alleviated concerns, with some reports suggesting Atlanta may consider releasing him if he is benched in favor of Penix or Rush.
Penix, who has a history of ACL tears—including three in his career—has yet to play in an NFL regular season game. His recovery timeline remains a key factor in the Falcons’ decision-making process.
Backup Quarterback Depth
Rush, who has started 16 games across eight NFL seasons, would step into the starting role if Tagovailoa cannot play. His career statistics include 3,766 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Strand, signed as an undrafted free agent, would back him up if needed.
The Falcons’ quarterback depth chart now faces its first major test before the regular season begins, with the outcome potentially reshaping the team’s offensive approach for the coming weeks.
