T-Mobile Chief Financial Officer Peter Osvaldik has publicly dismissed Starlink Mobile, Elon Musk’s satellite-based cellular service, as a competitive threat to traditional telecom providers, citing fundamental limitations in satellite technology.
T-Mobile’s stance on Starlink Mobile
At Citi’s 2026 Global TMT Conference on Wednesday, Osvaldik stated that Starlink Mobile does not pose a meaningful challenge to established wireless networks. He argued that satellite signals face significant obstacles in urban environments, including building penetration and interference from infrastructure.
“You can’t get through buildings, walls. You can’t even get through a Tesla windscreen,” Osvaldik said. “You can have 1 million satellites up there with all the spectrum in the world, you can’t break the fundamental laws of physics.”
Osvaldik also drew a parallel between Starlink’s shifting strategy and corporate accountability, suggesting that frequent strategic pivots would be grounds for dismissal in a major telecom company. “If we, as a management team, over the course of two months, changed the strategy to how we’re going to roll out a wireless network like a dozen times, it would laugh us out of the room and kick me out of the management team appropriately.”
SpaceX’s counterarguments and technical approach
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has previously outlined Starlink Mobile’s potential advantages, emphasizing its ability to eliminate dead zones and provide coverage in remote areas where traditional cell towers are impractical. During the company’s first earnings call in early August, Shotwell claimed Starlink could acquire a significant number of customers from major carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, which collectively generate $600 billion in annual revenue.
Starlink’s current constellation includes 650 direct-to-cell satellites in low Earth orbit, designed to communicate directly with standard smartphones. The company also operates over 10,000 broadband satellites, which serve as the backbone of its internet service. While Starlink Mobile aims to leverage satellite technology for broader coverage, its effectiveness in densely populated urban areas remains uncertain due to signal blockage by buildings and other obstructions.
SpaceX has not indicated that Starlink Mobile will rely solely on satellites. The company has not provided further technical details on how it plans to address urban coverage challenges, though industry observers note that hybrid solutions—such as integrating terrestrial towers—may be necessary for widespread adoption.
