Mississippi authorities have arrested Jarques Ratliff, 51, on a murder charge following an official homicide ruling in the death of Tasia Fortune, 29, a Black mother of four found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson on August 3. The arrest was announced by Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney during a Saturday news conference, confirming Ratliff was taken into custody without incident while walking along Capitol Street in Jackson. Officers executed search warrants at related properties in conjunction with the arrest.
Chief Brackney emphasized that the investigation remains active, stating additional arrest warrants are expected as detectives pursue further leads. Ratliff, a Jackson resident, had a prior personal connection with Fortune, though authorities did not elaborate on the nature of their relationship. Ratliff is scheduled to appear in Jackson Municipal Court by Monday morning, according to Mississippi State Defender André de Gruy.
The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified Fortune’s death as a homicide on Thursday, enabling law enforcement to proceed with formal charges. Fortune’s body was discovered in the backyard of a vacant property in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in Jackson. Investigators have conducted hundreds of hours of interviews with nearly 15 individuals and reviewed physical evidence over the past month.
Family and friends of Fortune have described her as a devoted mother, athlete, and woman of faith. A memorial service is planned to honor her legacy beyond the circumstances of her death. Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the investigation, including motive or the timeline of events leading to Fortune’s death.
The arrest follows weeks of national attention after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and other Democrats called for a Department of Justice investigation into hanging deaths of Black Americans, citing concerns of "racial terror" and "modern-day lynchings." Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks were made in the context of multiple recent cases involving Black individuals found deceased under similar circumstances, prompting widespread public and political debate.
Jackson Police Chief Brackney confirmed that the arrest marks a significant development but cautioned that the case is not yet closed. Detectives continue to follow leads and pursue additional avenues of inquiry as the investigation evolves.
