Social Security beneficiaries may receive a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, according to projections released by the AARP on September 11. The forecast, based on current inflation data, would mark the largest COLA since the 8.7% increase applied to 2023 benefits. The 2.8% adjustment for 2026 payments serves as the most recent benchmark.
The projected increase would translate to an average monthly rise of $75 for retirees, $59 for Social Security Disability Insurance recipients, and $70 for surviving spouses. The Department of Labor is set to release the official Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures for September in October, which will determine the final COLA. The adjustment is calculated using the CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for the months of July, August, and September.
AARP Public Policy Institute official Rich Johnson stated that rising prices have placed increasing financial pressure on older Americans, emphasizing the need for timely information to aid in budgeting. Tyler Bond of the National Academy of Social Insurance noted the 2027 COLA’s significance for millions of retirees facing higher living costs. The Senior Citizens League independently projected a 3.5% COLA, slightly lower than AARP’s estimate.
Separate reporting from Newsweek highlights that up to $5,181 in Social Security payments are scheduled for distribution this week to beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th of any month. The payment schedule follows a structured distribution pattern based on birth dates, with exceptions for those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or benefits before May 1997.
The maximum monthly retirement benefit for 2026 is $2,969 for individuals who claimed benefits at the full retirement age after earning at or above the taxable maximum throughout their careers. Social Security payments are distributed on Wednesdays, with SSI payments typically issued on the first of each month. Recipients who do not receive their expected payment within three business days are advised to contact the Social Security Administration (SSA).
The COLA announcement in October will finalize the adjustment for 2027, providing clarity on how inflation trends over the summer months will impact monthly benefits for tens of millions of Americans.
