The Atlantic hurricane season has reached a 60-year record low for hurricane formation, with no hurricanes developing since the season began on June 1. This marks the longest stretch without a hurricane in the basin since at least 1966, when modern storm tracking began with satellite surveillance.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that the first hurricane of the season typically forms by early or mid-August, but this year’s first named storm, Tropical Storm Arthur, did not reach hurricane status until September. The delay aligns with forecasts predicting below-normal activity for the 2026 season, which runs through November 30.
Record-Low Activity and Forecast Accuracy
The absence of hurricanes this season follows predictions from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, which anticipated seven to 13 named storms, including two to six hurricanes and zero to two major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). So far, five tropical storms have formed: Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, and Edouard. None have intensified into hurricanes.
Florida Climatologist Emily Powell noted that while the Atlantic has seen historic calm, the season is not over. "Conditions in much of the basin remain unfavorable for storm development," she said, citing strong atmospheric barriers and El Niño’s influence as key factors suppressing activity.
El Niño’s Role in Suppressing Storms
Meteorologists attribute the quiet season to El Niño, a climate pattern that warms Pacific waters and increases wind shear over the Atlantic. Jeff Edmondson, chief meteorologist for WAVY in Hampton Roads, explained that wind shear disrupts tropical systems, reducing the likelihood of hurricane formation. "El Niño is creating a lot of wind shear in the Atlantic basin," he said. "That shear rips apart a big tropical system."
The pattern has kept storm activity at historic lows, though experts caution that conditions could change. "We still have the rest of September and October," Edmondson added. "Storms can form quickly, and history shows major impacts can occur well into fall."
Regional Preparedness and Late-Season Risks
Despite the quiet season, officials emphasize that one storm can cause significant disruption. Curtis Sommerhoff, Director of Emergency Management at Florida State University, warned that half of all tropical activity occurs after mid-September. "It only takes one storm to make it a bad hurricane season," he said.
In Hampton Roads, Virginia, meteorologists noted that 1914 was the last year with comparably low activity. Don Slater, emeritus chief meteorologist for WAVY, recalled Hurricane Isabel (2003), which became a Category 5 storm before making landfall as a Category 2 in mid-September, causing power outages for weeks and widespread tree damage.
What’s Next for the 2026 Hurricane Season?
While the season has been unusually quiet, experts stress that the risk is not over. Powell and other climatologists highlight that warm ocean temperatures could still fuel late-season storms if conditions shift. "We have just now reached the statistical peak for tropical cyclone activity," Powell said. "It only takes one storm to make it a bad hurricane season."
NOAA and other agencies continue to monitor the basin, urging residents in coastal regions to remain prepared despite the current lull. The 2026 hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
