Amazon has announced a $1 increase to its minimum hourly wage for eligible full-time U.S. operations workers, raising the new minimum to $20 per hour, effective immediately. The company also introduced a new financial benefit program called "Day 1 Financial", providing qualified employees and their families with lifetime access to low-cost banking services through First Tech Federal Credit Union.
The e-commerce and cloud services giant stated that the average total compensation for eligible full-time employees in core operations roles now exceeds $32 per hour, including the value of existing benefits such as healthcare coverage for as little as $5 per week, a free Prime membership, and prepaid education programs.
New grocery discounts and banking benefits
All U.S. Amazon employees will receive a 20% discount on in-store purchases at Whole Foods starting October 1, applicable to groceries, the hot bar, and salad bar. Additionally, employees will get a 10% discount on eligible fresh groceries and essential items ordered on Amazon.com. These discounts align with Amazon’s expanded same-day delivery network for fresh groceries, which competes with major retailers like Walmart.
The company also confirmed that qualified employees, their spouses, and children will retain access to First Tech Federal Credit Union membership for life, even after leaving Amazon. This benefit includes basic services such as auto loans and is available to approximately 1.5 million Amazon employees worldwide, according to FactSet.
Average pay now $24 per hour
Amazon reported that the average hourly wage for core operations workers has risen to $24 per hour, up from previous levels. The company emphasized that frontline operations workers—who handle logistics, transportation, and fulfillment center tasks—are central to its business operations.
Existing benefits, such as free Prime memberships and healthcare coverage for eligible employees, remain unchanged. Amazon has stated that it has created more jobs across America in the last decade than any other company, with a significant portion of its workforce employed in warehouses and delivery stations.
UK pay increase details
In a separate announcement, Amazon revealed that 70,000 UK frontline staff will receive a pay increase of up to 5.6%, bringing minimum starting annual salaries to £31,408 (approximately $39,500) in most locations. Hourly wages for UK operations workers will rise to £15.10 or £16.10, depending on location, effective September 27. The company noted that this represents an 80p hourly increase over the past year and a 44% rise since 2022.
John Boumphrey, Amazon UK Country Manager, stated, “Our frontline teams are the backbone of our business, and this pay increase reflects that.” The UK raises follow similar wage adjustments in the U.S., reinforcing Amazon’s global compensation strategy.
