A Multnomah County grand jury has indicted Jesse Lee Calhoun, 41, on a new charge of first-degree manslaughter in the death of Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Gibson, 32, prosecutors announced Wednesday. Gibson’s death is believed to have occurred on or about November 18, 2022, though her body has not been recovered.
Calhoun, who was already charged in the deaths of five other women, now faces a total of six cases related to women’s deaths in the Portland area. Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez stated in a press release that the investigation remains active, emphasizing the office’s commitment to accountability. "We will not stop. We will do everything in our power to hold him accountable and see that justice is done for each and every one of these victims," Vasquez said.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s office did not provide additional details linking Calhoun to Gibson’s death but noted that the scope of the investigation is "enormous." Senior Deputy District Attorney Melissa Marrero highlighted the role of public cooperation, stating that even small pieces of information have contributed to the case’s progress.
Calhoun was arrested in June 2023 on unrelated parole warrants and has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He is currently serving a four-year sentence for a 2019 conviction on charges including assaulting a police officer, attempting to strangle a police dog, and burglary. His court-appointed attorney, Cameron Taylor, did not respond to requests for comment.
Gibson was reported missing in March 2023, and prosecutors allege Calhoun "unlawfully and recklessly caused" her death "under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life." Gibson’s family described her in a statement as a "kind, creative, and silly" person who welcomed others "with love and acceptance." They added, "Our family is grateful that a definitive step toward justice is finally being taken for our sister, Libby."
Calhoun has been charged with five counts of second-degree murder and four counts of abuse of a corpse in the deaths of five other women whose bodies were found in early 2023. The women, all in their twenties and thirties, include Charity Lynn Perry, 24, Bridget Leanne Webster, 31, and Joanna Speaks, 32, among others. The cases span multiple years, with indictments issued in 2024 and 2025.
Prosecutors have not disclosed whether Gibson knew Calhoun or the circumstances surrounding her death. Despite the lack of a recovered body, Marrero stated that prosecutors had "sufficient evidence" to proceed with the case.
