The U.S. Army has acquired 40,000 small drones as part of its Drone Dominance program, with officials confirming the service now has enough systems to distribute to every squad-level unit. However, the service faces a critical bottleneck: training sufficient operators to utilize the technology effectively in combat scenarios.
Col. Gregory Merkl, director of the Army’s Drone Dominance program, stated that 10,000 drones were fielded in the first phase, with an additional 30,000 drones currently being received. This brings the total to 40,000 drones, meeting the goal of equipping every platoon with drone capabilities. Merkl noted that while the hardware is now available, the challenge lies in ensuring qualified pilots are trained and distributed down to the squad level.
Training and Integration Efforts Underway
The Army is implementing multiple initiatives to address the training gap. Soldiers are being introduced to drone operations during basic training to build familiarity with the technology. Specialized courses, such as the Unmanned Advanced Lethality Course, have been established to provide advanced training for drone operators. Additionally, the service is integrating soldier feedback into drone tactics and refining training programs based on real-world scenarios.
The Drone Dominance program, launched in response to a 2023 memo from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, aims to purchase at least 200,000 drones by 2027 under a $1 billion investment. The program seeks to overhaul how the Pentagon acquires and integrates small uncrewed aerial systems across the armed forces. Last year, the Army held a series of evaluations called Gauntlets to select drone manufacturers for further advancement.
Future Plans and Strategic Goals
Army officials have emphasized that unmanned and autonomous systems are now considered necessary across every echelon of command and warfighting function. The service plans to field thousands of low-cost, one-way attack drones by the next fiscal year, expanding beyond reconnaissance and surveillance roles. The integration of drones into combat operations is expected to enhance situational awareness, precision strikes, and overall lethality for ground forces.
The Army’s approach includes exposing soldiers to drone technology early in their careers and transitioning them to advanced tactics as they progress. This phased training strategy aims to ensure troops are prepared for the evolving demands of modern warfare, where drones are increasingly central to mission success.
