A man in his 60s was taken into custody Monday morning after opening fire inside a South Los Angeles senior assisted living facility, wounding three staff members, one critically, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police responded to the Progressive Home for the Elderly near West 70th Street and Denver Avenue shortly before 11 a.m. PT, where they found the suspect inside the six-story building. Officers took the gunman into custody without firing any shots, officials said. A handgun believed to be used in the attack was recovered at the scene.
Victims and their conditions
The three wounded victims—a woman in her 40s, a woman in her 60s, and a man in his 60s—were all staff members of the facility. They were transported to a local hospital, with one victim listed in critical condition and the other two in stable condition. No residents of the facility were injured, officials confirmed.
Response and investigation
The Los Angeles Police Department reported that officers arrived within two minutes of the first 911 call. The suspect was located on a different floor from where the initial shooting occurred, and detectives were conducting interviews to determine a motive.
L.A. City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson praised first responders for their rapid response, stating that their actions likely prevented further harm. The facility houses more than 100 elderly residents, Harris-Dawson noted.
The shooting remains under investigation, with authorities declining to release additional details about the suspect’s identity or booking status at this time.
