U.S. President Donald Trump bought between $15,001 and $50,000 worth of shares in Elon Musk’s SpaceX on July 10, according to a public financial disclosure signed September 8. He sold between $1,001 and $15,000 worth of SpaceX shares on July 17, the same filing shows.
The transactions were part of more than 1,000 securities trades Trump made in July, totaling between roughly $79 million and $270 million in purchases and sales, according to a CNBC analysis of the disclosure. The largest non-SpaceX trades included sales of up to $25 million each in Microsoft and Amazon shares on July 20, followed by purchases of Microsoft and Amazon stock days later.
The Office of Government Ethics posted the disclosure online September 22, providing the first public confirmation of the SpaceX transactions. Federal officials report asset values using ranges, preventing precise calculations of investment amounts.
SpaceX’s federal ties
SpaceX, a U.S. military contractor, frequently seeks approvals from federal agencies, including the Department of Defense and NASA. The company’s June 12 initial public offering valued it at $1.77 trillion, making it the largest U.S. IPO on record. Trump previously purchased SpaceX shares in June, according to Reuters.
Portfolio management
A White House spokesman stated in a prior statement that third-party financial institutions independently manage Trump’s portfolio, replicating “recognized indexes, such as the Schwab 1000.” The president’s spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment on the July trades.
Ethics and disclosure process
The Office of Government Ethics collects and publishes financial disclosures from U.S. officials to ensure transparency. The July trades were among the most active months in Trump’s portfolio, reflecting broad reshuffling of investments across major tech and defense-linked companies.
