Police have charged 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway in the fatal stabbing of Dr. Idris Evans, 46, a medical director at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and the critical injury of Evans’ wife during an overnight home invasion in Edgewood Borough.
The Allegheny County Police Department confirmed Hemingway was taken into custody Thursday morning after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a double stabbing at a residence along Linden Avenue. Responding units arrived at approximately 12:30 a.m. and found Evans and his wife suffering from multiple stab wounds. Evans was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, while his wife remained in critical condition.
Hemingway’s Arrest and Charges
Police identified Hemingway as the suspect shortly after the attack. Authorities reported he was found behind a nearby home with lacerations to his hand and was transported to a hospital for treatment before being taken into custody. Hemingway now faces charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing.
According to court documents, Evans’ wife told investigators the attack began while she and her husband were asleep. She described the assailant as wearing only underwear and reportedly uttering phrases about “being God.” She also stated that Evans called the attacker by the name “Elijah,” as if recognizing him. During the assault, she yelled for their two children, ages 8 and 12, to flee to a neighbor’s home for safety.
Community and Institutional Response
UPMC Children’s Hospital issued a statement expressing grief over Evans’ death and extending condolences to his family, colleagues, and the broader community. “Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
Police have not publicly detailed a motive for the attack. The investigation remains ongoing, with detectives continuing to interview witnesses and review evidence. Authorities have not indicated whether additional suspects are being sought.
