Pelinka acknowledged James’ contributions, stating, “It’s been a great era, and we’re grateful for the run that we had with him here.” He emphasized the organization’s appreciation for James’ leadership while pivoting to the team’s future under new franchise stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
The Lakers’ offseason moves included re-signing Reaves to a four-year, $180 million contract—the largest in NBA history for an undrafted player—and acquiring center Walker Kessler to bolster the roster. Pelinka and Lakers coach JJ Redick described their strategy as a three-pronged approach to build around Doncic, prioritizing continuity and star power.
James, who played his 23rd NBA season in 2026, remained a key contributor even after Doncic’s injury forced him to miss the playoffs. The Lakers advanced past the Houston Rockets in the first round before falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals. Pelinka noted that communications with James throughout the transition were “held diplomatically and professionally,” calling the departure “amicable, professional, [and] graceful.”
