Police in Oxford, Mississippi, have arrested three individuals and seized more than 500 units of kratom following a narcotics raid on a local store, authorities announced Friday. The developments come amid the deaths of two University of Mississippi students, Aidan Hamilton, 18, and Robert Strang, 20, whose causes of death have not yet been determined.
Officials confirmed the arrests of Yahya Mohamed Mosleh, 51; Islam Mohamed, 18; and store owner Amer Alowdi, 40, in connection with the raid on Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store on Heritage Drive. The store was searched after authorities alleged it was trafficking narcotics, including THC cartridges, gummies, and kratom. The possession and sale of kratom have been prohibited in Oxford since 2019, police stated.
The deaths of Hamilton and Strang, both found separately this week, have raised concerns about the role of kratom in their cases. Toxicology reports are expected to be completed as early as next week, according to Mississippi’s commissioner of public safety, Sean Tindell. If fentanyl is detected in the results, authorities may pursue charges under Parker’s Law, a 2022 Mississippi statute that allows prosecution when unlawful fentanyl delivery results in a death.
