Indiana head football coach Curt Cignetti publicly addressed fan frustration following the Hoosiers' 38-0 season-opening win over Western Kentucky on Saturday. Cignetti, whose team improved to 3-0 overall, pushed back against criticism of the program’s early-season performance during his weekly radio appearance on Thursday.
Indiana’s 38-0 victory over Western Kentucky marked the team’s third consecutive win to start the 2024 season. The Hoosiers, defending national champions, struggled to generate offense in the first quarter before pulling away in the second half. Despite the lopsided score, some fans expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s slow start against an unranked opponent.
Cignetti defended his squad’s performance and the program’s recent success during his remarks. He noted that Indiana was 30-2 overall and 17-1 in Big Ten play under his leadership, including a national championship in his second season. Referencing the fanbase’s expectations, he stated, “What are we, 29-2? When I came, I saw the pictures, 10,000 people in the stands. Don’t (expletive) about a 38-0 win.”
Indiana’s next challenge comes Friday night against a 2-0 Northwestern team, which Cignetti described as “a good football team” and compared to Indiana’s own rise two seasons ago. The Hoosiers will not face a ranked opponent until hosting No. 7 Ohio State on October 10.
Cignetti acknowledged that early-season wins against non-conference opponents may not satisfy fans accustomed to the team’s recent dominance. “Last year, IU was rolling over teams at the beginning of the season,” he said. “This year, it might take more time for the Hoosiers to jell.”
The Hoosiers’ upcoming schedule includes conference play against Northwestern, followed by a stretch of games against ranked opponents, including Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State. Cignetti emphasized that the team’s performance against stronger competition would provide a clearer evaluation of its 2024 potential.
