The Philadelphia Phillies will begin their postseason run on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves with a notable shift in their lineup and rotation.
Jesus Luzardo returns from injury as Luis Arraez misses series
Left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo, who missed part of September with a left shoulder injury, is set to make his postseason debut in the Wild Card series opener. Luzardo, who posted a 2.86 ERA in 30 appearances this season, will start Game 1 of the series. The Phillies have not announced his expected workload for the game.
Meanwhile, infielder Luis Arraez will miss the series after spraining his ankle during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers last week. Arraez, acquired at the trade deadline from the San Francisco Giants, batted .278 with a .678 OPS in 46 games for Philadelphia following the trade. Otto Kemp, who played 13 games for the Phillies this season, will replace Arraez in the lineup.
Phillies secure Wild Card spot with late-season win
The Phillies clinched the final National League Wild Card spot on Sunday with an 88-74 record, following a 7-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The win came after a late-season surge that saw the team overcome a four-game deficit to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the final week of the regular season.
Manager Don Mattingly, who took over as interim manager after Rob Thomson was fired earlier in the season, delivered remarks to the team following the win. According to reports, Mattingly emphasized the importance of making the playoffs regardless of how the team secured its spot.
Rotation and lineup adjustments for postseason
Luzardo’s return adds depth to a rotation that had been without him since mid-September. He posted a 1.82 ERA in 11 appearances following the All-Star break, striking out 85 batters in 69.1 innings. His presence could provide a significant boost as the Phillies begin their postseason campaign.
The loss of Arraez, who had posted career-best defensive metrics since joining the Phillies, leaves a gap in the lineup. Kemp, who had limited playing time this season, will step into the role. Arraez batted .278 with two home runs and 21 RBIs in 46 games after the trade, while Kemp recorded a .228 OPS in 13 games.
The Phillies’ first-round series against the Braves begins Tuesday, with Luzardo on the mound and Kemp in the lineup.
