Russia’s embassy in the United Kingdom has issued a statement warning that any NATO or British military action against Kaliningrad—a Russian exclave bordered by NATO members Poland and Lithuania—would be met with a response using all means at Russia’s disposal, including nuclear weapons.
The warning followed the broadcast of The Wargame, a Sky News miniseries simulating a hypothetical Russian attack on the UK. In the scenario, participants including former UK officials discussed retaliatory strikes against Kaliningrad and Murmansk. Murmansk, home to Russia’s Northern Fleet, is a key strategic naval base.
In a post on the Russian embassy’s Telegram channel, the embassy stated: ‘Any British or NATO military action against Russian territory would be met with a response using all means at Russia’s disposal, including nuclear weapons.’ The statement emphasized that while Russia does not seek confrontation, it would respond decisively if provoked.
The warning was echoed by Russia’s embassy in Belgium, which handles diplomatic relations with NATO. In a separate statement, the embassy said it had raised concerns with NATO’s International Secretariat and the Belgian Foreign Ministry, asserting that attempts to isolate Kaliningrad could ‘sharply increase the risks of a direct military confrontation.’
Russia has repeatedly described Kaliningrad as a critical vulnerability due to its geographic isolation from mainland Russia. The exclave is situated between NATO members Poland and Lithuania, making it a focal point for military exercises and geopolitical tensions. Earlier this month, NATO conducted an air exercise over northeastern Poland near Kaliningrad, involving US and Norwegian fighter jets, surveillance aircraft, and electronic-warfare platforms.
The UK’s top naval official, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, has previously characterized Russia as the ‘greatest threat’ to British security, stating that Moscow is ‘probing for weakness.’ Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the UK has provided £16 billion (approximately $21 billion) in military aid to Kyiv.
Russian officials, including Yulia Zhdanova, have claimed that NATO countries are ‘already testing specific scenarios for blockading’ Kaliningrad. The exclave has been described by some analysts as ‘the Achilles Heel of the Russian Federation,’ given its reliance on supply routes through neighboring NATO states.
NATO has not publicly commented on the Russian warnings. The alliance has previously stated that its military activities are defensive and do not target any specific country.
