Charles Kelley, co-lead vocalist and founding member of the country music trio Lady A, has revealed a diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. Kelley shared the news in an Instagram video on Tuesday alongside his wife, Cassie McConnell Kelley, stating that doctors discovered the condition during tests prompted by unexplained rib fractures.
In the video, Kelley described the diagnosis as unexpected but emphasized his optimism about treatment options. "I'm young, I feel healthy, and the treatments, I will have to say, have just come so far, even in the past five years," he said. He also noted that he has the first six months of treatment planned but did not specify a start date. Kelley added that he does not anticipate the treatment being "too super invasive" and expressed confidence in continuing work and performances.
Kelley acknowledged the emotional weight of sharing the diagnosis, comparing it to his past openness about sobriety. "I think in the same spirit of the way we've kind of shared a lot of my sobriety journey, just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing," he said. He assured fans that continuing to perform and spend time with loved ones would remain a priority throughout his treatment.
What is multiple myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer where abnormal plasma cells crowd out healthy cells in the bone marrow, which produce red blood cells, platelets, and other white blood cells. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is the most common type of plasma cell tumor and can develop in the bone marrow before spreading throughout the body. The CDC notes that the exact cause of multiple myeloma is unclear, though age is the most significant risk factor. Men are also more likely than women to develop the condition.
Kelley’s diagnosis follows a series of medical tests initiated after he experienced "random rib fractures." He described the fractures as a catalyst for further investigation, leading to the discovery of the cancer. Despite the diagnosis, Kelley expressed determination to face the challenge, stating, "It's just another hurdle, and I'm pretty confident that we're going to get through it."
Kelley has been open about his health journey in the past, including his sobriety, which he referenced in the video.
