Santa Ana police have released surveillance footage and are actively investigating a woman they believe deliberately ran over and killed a 9-month-old male black-and-white pit bull mix on September 8 in the area of 900 W. Park Lane.
Police confirm ongoing investigation and public appeal for information. The Santa Ana Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the driver of a Honda Odyssey minivan captured on video performing the act. The footage, shared by authorities on social media, shows the woman placing dog food near the driver’s door, removing the puppy from the vehicle, and then driving forward to pin the animal under her rear left tire for approximately 15 seconds before fleeing northbound on Lowell Street. The puppy did not survive the incident.
Video evidence confirms neighbor’s report of intentional act. Animal Services officers responded to the scene on September 8 after a neighbor reported seeing a minivan and suspected a puppy had been intentionally run over. Police and animal control spent weeks canvassing the area before locating the surveillance video that corroborated the neighbor’s account. The footage does not capture a readable license plate, and the woman’s identity remains unknown.
California law allows felony charges for malicious animal cruelty. Under California law, maliciously and intentionally killing an animal can be charged as felony animal cruelty, punishable by up to three years in county jail and fines of up to $20,000. Previous cases in the state have resulted in similar charges, including a 2024 San Diego County case where a man was sentenced to two years in prison for running over a dog during a road rage incident.
Authorities request public assistance in identifying suspect. The Santa Ana Police Department is asking anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle to contact them at (714) 245-8378. The department has not provided further details about the suspect’s appearance or additional investigative steps at this time.
