United Airlines has initiated a status-match campaign targeting elite frequent flyers from Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, offering temporary elite status with the airline.
United announced that travelers with any tier of elite status on Delta or American will receive a 90-day trial period of equivalent United status. To maintain the status through January 31, 2028, customers must meet spending requirements on United flights within the trial period. For example, those with Delta Silver or American Gold status must spend $1,500 on United flights, while those aiming for United’s highest tier, 1K status, must spend $7,000.
The offer includes a social media campaign that directly contrasts United’s services with those of Delta and American. United highlighted its Starlink-powered WiFi, claiming it provides the fastest in-flight internet in the industry. The airline has equipped one-third of its fleet with Starlink as of mid-September and plans to complete the rollout by the end of 2025. While American Airlines also plans to introduce Starlink next year, the service is not yet available on its aircraft.
United’s campaign runs until October 15, with customers having 90 days to meet the spending requirements. The airline’s aggressive approach marks a significant escalation in the competition among major U.S. carriers for high-spending travelers. Industry analyst Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research Group, described the move as “war, airline style”, noting that United’s direct targeting of rivals is unusually blunt.
American Airlines responded by launching its own status-match program on Wednesday, offering four-month elite status matches to travelers with status on Southwest, JetBlue, Delta, or United. However, the practicality of switching airlines varies by region, as some travelers may find limited route options from their local airports. For instance, Delta maintains a stronger presence in the Southern U.S., while United and American dominate in other regions.
The competition underscores the airlines’ efforts to attract high-value customers through enhanced services, including premium seating, international routes, and lounge access. United’s campaign reflects a broader trend of airlines using loyalty programs and in-flight amenities as key differentiators in a fiercely contested market.
