Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused as director Matt Reeves steps away to address a family matter, DC Studios announced in a statement to Deadline on Monday. The studio confirmed it supports Reeves and expects production to resume in the near future.
The sequel to the 2022 film The Batman—which grossed $772 million worldwide—features Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Bruce Wayne. Other returning cast members include Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin), Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál, and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez. New additions to the cast include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Charles Dance, and Sebastian Koch.
The film’s release date has been delayed multiple times, with the current target set for February 18, 2028. Previous delays included pushes from an initial October 2025 release to October 2026, then October 2027. DC Studios co-chief James Gunn noted in December 2024 that multi-year gaps between sequels are common in blockbuster franchises, citing examples like Alien (7 years), The Incredibles (14 years), and Top Gun (36 years).
Filming began in London in June 2024 after Reeves and Mattson Tomlin completed the script. A brief test footage clip shared by Reeves in July showed Pattinson in a new Batsuit amid falling snow. While the studio has not confirmed whether the pause will affect the release date, sources told Deadline that it is too early to determine the impact.
The Batman Part II is expected to follow the events of the 2024 HBO series The Penguin, which itself is set after the first film. Story details remain under wraps, with the project maintaining high anticipation among fans.
DC Studios emphasized in its statement that Reeves has its full backing during this period.
