Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Moscow overnight, marking one of the largest aerial assaults on the Russian capital in two years. Russian authorities reported that 650 drones were launched toward the city, with 185 drones destroyed or neutralized across 16 municipalities in the Moscow region.
Two men, aged 71 and 20, were killed in separate locations on the outskirts of Moscow, while nine others were injured. Russian officials also reported damage to 47 homes across seven municipalities and four apartments in a residential building in the village of Lobanovo. Several settlements in the region were left without power as crews worked to restore electricity.
Fuel facility hit in Volodarskaya
A drone strike reportedly struck a fuel storage tank at the Volodarskaya oil depot, Moscow’s largest oil distribution facility, which supplies diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel to the capital’s three main airports. A fire erupted at the site, though officials have not confirmed the cause. Video footage circulating online purportedly shows a large blaze, but no official confirmation has linked the fire directly to the drone attack.
Airport operations disrupted
Air traffic at Moscow’s four airports was disrupted multiple times during the night and morning due to the strikes, with air traffic restrictions imposed by Russian aviation authorities. The Moscow mayor’s office stated that most drones were intercepted by air defenses at long range, while an additional 105 drones were shot down as they approached the city.
Russian state news agency TASS described the attack as the second largest drone strike on Moscow and the surrounding region in the past two years, occurring hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The Ukrainian government has not immediately commented on the reported attack.
