The University of Arizona has suspended activities for six fraternities and paused operations for nearly all others after the Dean of Students Office reported an increase in misconduct allegations, including hazing, assault, and drug and alcohol violations. The suspension, announced Monday in a letter to Greek life chapters, prohibits fraternities from hosting, attending, or sponsoring any organizational activities until advisers meet with university officials in scheduled sessions this week and next.
Six fraternities face immediate suspension while the remaining chapters are barred from activities pending compliance reviews. The university cited multiple ongoing investigations into nearly half of the school’s Interfraternity Council chapters, with Dean Chrissy Lieberman stating in the letter that the volume and severity of cases had reached a threshold requiring immediate action. The suspension applies at least until advisers meet with Lieberman in one of three scheduled meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday, or October 12.
University spokesman Nick Prevenas declined to provide details on any criminal investigations tied to the cases, including whether the suspension was prompted by recent public scrutiny of Greek life policies at other institutions. The letter referenced national scrutiny of Greek organizations, noting that the value of the Greek experience is under review across college campuses. Lieberman’s office also indicated it had reached investigative capacity, with new reports continuing to emerge despite prior warnings to chapter presidents in August about potential consequences for noncompliance.
The suspension follows spring semester findings of misconduct against some fraternities and comes just seven weeks into the fall term. The Dean of Students Office is investigating reports involving nearly half of the school’s Interfraternity Council chapters, with Lieberman describing the concerns as egregious. The university has not disclosed the names of the suspended fraternities or the specific allegations under review.
