One officer, a 40-year-old father of two, was shot three times. The second officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times. The identity of the officer who died has not been released. Both officers remain hospitalized, with the surviving officer in critical condition.
Suspect arrested after hiding in tree
Additional officers and a SWAT team responded to the scene and located the suspect, who had fired at responding officers multiple times. Police reported that the suspect was found hiding in a tree and taken into custody. Authorities recovered three firearms from the scene: two handguns and a shotgun. One of the handguns was identified as having been taken from one of the injured officers.
Officials respond to the shooting
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker expressed gratitude for the officers' service and urged prayers for their recovery. "We think of them as law enforcement officers, but I see mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters," Parker said. Commissioner Bethel praised the officers' bravery, stating, "I am so damn proud of the men and women who serve in this department. Consistently, they go into danger, and they give their lives for this job."
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the circumstances leading to the shooting.
