President Donald Trump stated at a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, on Wednesday that government officials who leak sensitive information to the media should face severe consequences, including the possibility of execution. Trump’s remarks came during a rally supporting Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and other downballot Republicans as part of his 2026 campaign swing across western states.
Trump advocates lethal penalties for leakers
During the rally, Trump said, “Leakers should be, in my opinion, leakers should be shot.” He referenced what he described as a planned U.S. military strike on Iran in June 2025, asserting that a leak of operational timing forced the administration to alter its plans. “Somebody leaked, some sleazebag. They ought to go to jail or be shot,” Trump stated. He also accused journalists covering the rally of acting similarly to leakers by disseminating information he deemed false.
Administration crackdown on leaks
Since returning to office, the Trump administration has intensified efforts to prevent classified information from reaching the media. Federal agencies have been directed to require new and existing employees to sign nondisclosure agreements. Additionally, approximately 50 members of the U.S. military’s Joint Staff were subjected to polygraph tests to determine whether they had shared classified information with journalists, according to a report by The New York Times. In January, federal authorities executed a search warrant at the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson as part of an investigation into a government contractor accused of illegally retaining classified materials.
Context of Trump’s remarks
Trump has repeatedly criticized the news media, previously labeling it the “true Enemy of the People.” His latest comments align with a broader pattern of rhetoric targeting both leakers and journalists, framing them as threats to national security. The administration’s actions have drawn scrutiny from press freedom advocates, who argue that such measures could chill whistleblowing and investigative reporting.
The White House has not issued an official statement clarifying Trump’s remarks on lethal penalties for leakers.
