A shooting at a Midtown Manhattan subway station Saturday afternoon left one man dead and disrupted train service, authorities said.
A man was fatally shot on the E train platform at 7th Avenue and 53rd Street around 12:20 p.m., according to the New York City Police Department. Emergency responders transported the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police confirmed no arrests had been made as of late Saturday, and trains bypassed the station during the investigation.
Witnesses described chaos after the shooting. Hassen Pinchback, visiting from Orlando, Florida, told reporters he heard "five or six live rounds" and saw people flee the platform. "It was like a stampede," he said. Another witness, identified only as Miller from Washington state, said she and her daughter heard about five shots while seated in an open subway car. She reported the shooter looked directly at her daughter before continuing to fire. Both witnesses said a bystander performed chest compressions on the victim until police arrived.
The victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries, police confirmed. Authorities said the dispute involved two or three men, though no further details about the individuals or the nature of the argument were immediately available. The NYPD did not release a description of the suspect, who fled northbound after the shooting.
The incident occurred near major cultural landmarks, including Broadway theaters and Carnegie Hall, during a busy Saturday afternoon. Subway service at the station was suspended temporarily as investigators combed the platform for evidence. Violent crime in New York City has declined significantly since pandemic-era spikes, with homicides down 20% through mid-October compared to the same period last year.
Police have not disclosed a motive or identified a suspect. The investigation remains active, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
