A deadly fire broke out at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday, killing and injuring multiple people, Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed. Authorities reported the blaze spread rapidly due to high winds, crossing the base’s perimeter and forcing emergency responses across the region.
Emergency crews and military personnel are coordinating with local and provincial authorities to manage the situation, which officials described as ‘very, very active and delicate.’ No evacuation orders have been issued, but residents near the base were urged to avoid the area and give emergency vehicles right of way.
Casualties and Injuries Confirmed
Defence Minister McGuinty stated that both fatalities and injuries occurred as a result of the incident, though he did not provide specific numbers. A doctor at Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital told CBC News that hospitals in the city were overwhelmed by the number of patients, calling the situation a ‘disaster’ and a ‘one in every 15 to 25-year disaster.’
Emergency services transported injured personnel to hospitals across Edmonton, 180 km (112 miles) northwest of the base, as local health-care facilities struggled to cope. Fire crews from multiple jurisdictions battled the flames, which were fueled by wind gusts up to 100 km/h (62 mph).
Base and Community Response
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are leading the investigation into the cause of the fire, which began in a training area at the base. General Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, stated that the Canadian Armed Forces are prioritizing the welfare of military members, their families, and the surrounding community.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, one of Canada’s busiest military training installations, houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. The base regularly conducts live-fire exercises and combat simulations, with 690 military personnel and 300 civilian workers typically on site.
Provincial and Federal Coordination
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed condolences in a social media post, stating his ‘thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.’ Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the fire ‘significant and tragic,’ noting it impacted many military personnel in the province.
Neighbouring provinces offered support. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said his government had deployed resources to Alberta, while British Columbia Premier David Eby stated his administration had reached out to offer assistance. The Municipal District of Wainwright confirmed the fire had torn through base fences and was spreading into rural areas.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire or released casualty figures. Defence Minister McGuinty stated officials are still gathering information and expected to provide further updates as the situation stabilizes.
