A U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant died after a rappel descent accident during a pregame ceremony at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Saturday. Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, a 15-year service member assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, Joint Base San Antonio, was treated on the field following the fall and later died at a local hospital, according to a statement from Nellis Air Force Base Public Affairs. The incident occurred before the Navy-University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) football game, part of an annual “Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans” event. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is underway.
Game proceeds after delay
The incident delayed the start of the game by approximately 10 minutes as emergency responders attended to Patterson. UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor noted the emotional impact on the crowd of over 23,000 spectators, stating that the energy in the stadium shifted following the fall. The game continued as scheduled and concluded with UTSA’s 38-34 victory over Navy. The American Conference issued a statement extending condolences to Patterson’s family, friends, and fellow airmen.
Military honors and service background
Patterson, a Tactical Air Control Party instructor, was from Fort Stewart, Georgia, and had served in the U.S. military for 15 years. He held multiple decorations, including the Air and Space Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and was named the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year in 2022. Brigadier General Scott C. Mills, 57th Wing commander, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that Patterson’s service was deeply valued within the wing. The Air Force confirmed that Patterson was assigned to Nellis Air Force Base at the time of his death.
Visual evidence and public reaction
Video footage posted on social media showed Patterson descending rapidly in combat fatigues before plummeting feet-first to the field. The demonstration, part of a pregame salute to the military, drew immediate attention from spectators, band members, and cheerleaders assembled nearby. Officials did not disclose further details about the nature of the accident while emphasizing the ongoing investigation. The Air Force has not provided additional updates pending the results of the inquiry.
