Former ESPN reporter and State Department press adviser Britt McHenry resigned from her position on Thursday, one day after a widely circulated video showed her throwing a drink during an altercation at a Washington Wizards game. The incident occurred during the Wizards' home opener against the Milwaukee Bucks at Capital One Arena on Wednesday night.
McHenry confirmed her resignation in a statement to Front Office Sports, while the U.S. Department of State declined to comment on personnel matters. Multiple outlets, including Page Six and TMZ, first reported her departure on Friday.
The altercation unfolded after McHenry intervened in a verbal exchange between fans seated behind her and Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma’s fiancée, Winnie Harlow. Video footage, obtained by TMZ, shows McHenry speaking with an usher and a companion before a clear liquid struck the back of her head. She responded by throwing a drink in the direction of the person who threw it. As she exited, McHenry was seen giving the middle finger and blowing kisses to the crowd, which included fans shouting insults and throwing towels.
McHenry was appointed to her State Department role in September 2023, according to reports. Her tenure lasted less than two months. In 2015, she was suspended by ESPN for one week after a viral video showed her berating a towing company employee.
The State Department has not provided further details about the circumstances of her resignation. McHenry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
