New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo may have suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s 27-21 overtime victory over the Houston Texans in Week 7. Skattebo revealed after the game that he felt something in his hamstring while sliding on the final play of regulation, according to NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN.
The Giants secured the win with a 42-yard run by Skattebo that set up Devin Singletary’s game-winning touchdown in overtime. Skattebo finished the game with 124 rushing yards and one touchdown on 17 carries, marking his first 100-yard rushing performance of the season. Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Singletary combined for 56 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the game.
Giants head coach John Harbaugh expressed confidence in the running back room following the performance, noting that the team’s 188 rushing yards were the most in a single game this season. The Giants’ four rushing touchdowns in the game marked the first time the team accomplished this feat since December 3, 1950, per the Associated Press.
Possible Injury Update
Skattebo’s status remains uncertain as the Giants enter their bye week. He stated, “Good thing we have a bye week,” suggesting the team will assess his condition before his next potential appearance. The Giants’ running back corps includes Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary, who could see increased workloads if Skattebo misses time.
Skattebo, a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has rushed for 704 yards and six touchdowns in his professional career. His performance against the Texans followed a zero-touch game against the New Orleans Saints in Week 6, during which he was demoted from the lead running back role. Harbaugh denied that the benching was intentional, stating that the team simply did not call runs when Skattebo was in the game.
Penalty Controversy
In the first quarter of the Texans game, Skattebo was called for unnecessary roughness after lowering his helmet and colliding with safety M.J. Stewart. The flag was thrown despite Skattebo not targeting a defenseless player, a decision that drew confusion from Harbaugh and observers. The play occurred during a tight matchup where the Giants and Texans were tied 14-14 at halftime.
The Giants’ coaching staff has not provided an update on Skattebo’s injury beyond his postgame remarks. The team will use the bye week to evaluate his condition and determine his availability for future games.
