Legendary Inside the NBA host Ernie Johnson announced Wednesday that he will step away from the show after the 2026-27 NBA season, concluding a 37-year run as the program’s host.
Johnson, who turned 70 this past summer, shared the news in a video posted on social media, stating the decision was his own. He acknowledged recent health issues, including heart problems and bypass surgery 14 months ago, as contributing factors alongside his desire to spend more time with his wife and five grandchildren.
"I've been hosting 'Inside the NBA' for a long time. This is my 37th year," Johnson said in the video. "As the years have gone by and I turned 70 this past summer, folks have asked me, 'So how long are you going to keep doing Inside?' Well, I want to take a couple of minutes of your time to answer that. This will be my last season. Totally my decision. It's just time."
Johnson emphasized that his departure is not a full retirement from broadcasting. He plans to continue working on March Madness coverage and other projects for TNT and CBS through his production company, 32 Bow Ties. He also expressed gratitude for his time alongside co-hosts Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and Shaquille O'Neal, as well as the show’s production crews.
"This isn't a case where my doctor said, 'You need to stop working,'" Johnson clarified. "It's nothing like that." He added that his decision stemmed from a personal vow to step away if the preparation and joy of his work ever became more of a challenge than a fulfillment.
Johnson’s tenure on Inside the NBA has been marked by its longevity and cultural impact, with the show becoming a staple of sports media since its inception. His announcement marks the end of an era for the program, though he will remain involved in other broadcasting capacities.
