Passengers aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey were given eight hours to disembark in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, on Tuesday after the company suspended operations. The abrupt halt stranded residents who had paid between $119,999 and $439,999 for lifetime cabins, with some reporting ongoing financial appeals for fuel and operational costs.
Villa Vie Residences confirmed the suspension, citing rising fuel costs and logistical challenges as key factors. Company cofounder and executive chairman Mikael Petterson acknowledged cost-cutting measures, including itinerary adjustments, and attributed difficulties to the novelty of the venture. "When you're the first one doing something, of course you're going to make a ton of mistakes," he stated in an interview with Business Insider.
Residents described a deteriorating situation in the ship’s final months. Claude Sadovsky, who joined the Odyssey in September 2024, left the vessel in early October after frustration with itinerary changes. Starr Davis, another passenger, cited constant cash appeals for fuel as her reason for departing. Some residents reported organizing fundraisers to support crew members amid the financial strain.
Julia Witt, a British passenger who paid £110,000 for a cabin, told the Daily Mail she believed the voyage was unsustainable from the outset. "It was obvious from the start that the ship’s operators were charging too little and spending more than they took in," she said. Despite predicting the outcome, Witt described the experience as "worth every penny" of her retirement savings.
Villa Vie’s ownership structure, where 88% of the company is owned by residents, was noted as a potential vulnerability. Petterson confirmed this arrangement, adding that residents were frequently approached for additional funds. The company has not disclosed plans for refunds or compensation for stranded passengers.
The Odyssey’s abrupt halt follows months of financial distress, including frequent cash calls and service reductions. Passengers reported being given minimal notice to gather belongings before disembarking. The company has not provided further details on the suspension or next steps for affected residents.
