The Philadelphia Eagles extended their losing streak to six games with a 27-10 defeat to the Washington Commanders on Sunday Night Football. Saquon Barkley, the team’s star running back, confirmed that the Eagles’ front office had discussed his future beyond the upcoming trade deadline.
Barkley addressed reports of potential roster moves in the aftermath of the loss, stating: “It was mentioned to me.” He emphasized his commitment to the organization, saying: “I have nothing but respect for this organization, like top to bottom. I really do think they do things the right way.” Barkley also reiterated his desire to help the team improve, noting: “I feel like I'm the type of player and type of person that can help us get out of it.”
ESPN’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport later reported via sources that the Eagles do not plan to trade Barkley before the deadline, with general manager Howie Roseman instead surveying the market for draft compensation by potentially trading other players.
The Eagles’ struggles continued without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is reportedly set to miss the remainder of the season due to blood clots in his lungs. Backup Tanner McKee struggled against Washington’s defense, which held Barkley to just 30 yards on 13 carries. The Commanders’ defense dominated after an early 10-0 Eagles lead, with Washington scoring 27 unanswered points. Key moments included a strip-sack by Dorance Armstrong, a 53-yard reception by Treylon Burks, and a late interception by Rasul Douglas.
Barkley, who signed with Philadelphia in 2024 after a Super Bowl-winning season with the New York Giants, acknowledged the team’s challenges but expressed optimism about their ability to rebound. “It's not just one person. It's gonna take a whole bunch of us,” he said. The Eagles’ next steps remain uncertain as they navigate a difficult season with multiple roster and health concerns.
