An Indian tourist was killed and a New Zealander injured after two helicopters collided while attempting to land near Mount Everest’s base camp on Tuesday, November 3.
The crash occurred in Pheriche village, located at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level, according to multiple officials. The Indian national, identified as Vasant Kumar Balara Madu (47), died in the incident, while the New Zealander, Shailesh Krishna Patel, was airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. A Nepali pilot also sustained minor injuries and was treated locally.
Helicopters operated by Fishtail Air and Dynasty Air were involved in the collision. Fishtail Air reported that its helicopter was carrying passengers rescued from the Everest region when the crash occurred. Dynasty Air stated its helicopter was transporting only cargo.
Authorities confirm collision during landing attempt
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) deputy spokesperson, Gyanendra Bhul, said the helicopters were approaching the landing zone from different directions when the collision happened. Preliminary assessments suggest snow-covered helipads may have contributed to the accident, as both aircraft reportedly attempted to land at the same spot despite available alternatives.
Peak trekking season underway
The incident occurred during Nepal’s peak trekking season, when helicopters are heavily used to transport trekkers and climbers in the Everest region. Heavy snow had previously blocked routes, but improved weather allowed thousands of hikers to resume their journeys. The Everest base camp trek, which lasts up to two weeks, relies entirely on air transport due to the lack of roads in the area.
No roads, limited evacuation options
Nepal’s challenging terrain makes helicopters the only viable means for evacuating sick or exhausted trekkers from high-altitude locations. The crash follows a period of severe weather that stranded many hikers before conditions eased.
Investigation ongoing
The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, with authorities reviewing flight paths, weather conditions, and operational procedures. No further details on the identities of other passengers or crew have been released.
Background: Nepal’s helicopter reliance
Helicopters play a critical role in Nepal’s tourism and emergency response sectors, particularly in the Himalayan region. The country’s limited infrastructure and extreme altitudes necessitate air transport for medical evacuations, supply deliveries, and tourist transfers.
