Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have moved into a new home in the Cotswolds, ending their search for a permanent residence in the UK. The couple, who returned to Britain in August after six years in California, have taken up residence in a property on the estate of a wealthy friend near the Cotswolds.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been living in the main house on the estate while conducting their search. Reports indicate they have now moved to a separate property on the same grounds, though the exact location has not been disclosed. The move follows their decision to stop house hunting in Britain, according to multiple sources.
The couple retained their £19.5 million mansion in Montecito, California, which features amenities including a gym, swimming pool, cinema, wine cellar, and 13 bathrooms. Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are currently attending school in the UK. Meghan Markle is also expected to temporarily relocate to Australia in 2024 to co-host Junior MasterChef, with potential visits from Harry and their children.
Prince Harry has previously cited a desire to enroll their children in British schools as a key reason for the family’s return to the UK. However, neither Harry nor Meghan has confirmed whether they plan to remain in Britain long-term. The couple has not been staying with the royal family since their return, instead residing with their friend in the English countryside.
The Sussexes had been exploring properties in the Cotswolds with specific requirements, including at least nine bedrooms, ample land, and no public rights of way. Their search was reportedly paused after they moved into the new property on their friend’s estate. The friend, identified as a wealthy businessman with ties to military charities, has welcomed the family to continue living on the estate.
The couple’s living arrangements have drawn public interest, particularly as they navigate their roles outside the royal family. Harry has also been engaged in a long-running dispute with the UK government over the restoration of publicly funded police protection, which was withdrawn when the couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020.
