JetBlue Airways has increased checked bag fees for the third time in less than a year, raising the cost for most economy passengers on domestic, Caribbean, and Latin American flights. The new fees, announced on Tuesday, apply to bookings made more than 24 hours before departure during non-peak periods, with a first checked bag now costing $50, up from $45. Within 24 hours of departure, the fee rises to $60. During peak travel periods, such as holidays or summer, the fee increases to $55, and to $70 if paid within 24 hours of departure.
The airline also noted exceptions for customers holding a co-branded JetBlue credit card or elite frequent flyer status, who may check bags for free. JetBlue Plus, JetBlue Business, and JetBlue Premier cardmembers receive one free checked bag for the cardholder and up to three travel companions. TrueBlue Mosaic members may check at least one bag for free, with Mosaic 2, 3, and 4 members eligible for two free checked bags.
JetBlue attributed the fee hike to rising fuel and operating costs, stating in a release that the adjustment helps maintain competitive base fares while allowing customers to pay only for bags they need. The airline encouraged travelers to add checked bags to their trips at least 24 hours before departure to save up to $15 on the first checked bag.
The increase follows similar moves by other major U.S. carriers this year, including Delta, United, and Southwest, after JetBlue’s prior fee adjustments in March and earlier this month. Industry analysts note that jet fuel prices have roughly doubled since January, reaching $4.44 per gallon on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Airlines for America’s jet fuel price tracker reported a price of $4.41 per gallon on Monday, up from just over $2 per gallon at the start of the year.
JetBlue’s latest fee adjustment marks a continuation of industry-wide cost-cutting measures as airlines grapple with surging operational expenses. The airline emphasized that the changes are part of broader efforts to balance affordability for passengers with the financial pressures of rising fuel prices.
