Democratic candidates secured victories in three Florida congressional districts on election night, defying expectations set by Republican-led redistricting efforts aimed at expanding the GOP’s congressional majority in the state.
Democrats hold three redrawn districts
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) defeated former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer in Florida’s 25th Congressional District, 51.5% to 46.4%, with 95% of the vote counted, according to the Associated Press. The race was called at 8:07 p.m. ET. Moskowitz’s victory came in a district that voted for Donald Trump by 10 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election, a margin that had prompted Republicans to redraw the map to favor their candidates.
Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL) won re-election in Florida’s 14th District, defeating former Republican state Rep. Mike Beltran 51% to 46%, with 97% of the vote counted. The New York Times called the race at 8:22 p.m. ET. Castor’s district was also redrawn as part of the Republican-led redistricting effort.
In an open race for Florida’s 22nd District, Democratic candidate Pia Dandiya, a former school principal, led Republican Casey Askar 52% to 48%, with 94% of the vote counted. CNN called the race for Dandiya at 8:24 p.m. ET. Askar, a Marine veteran and business owner, was the Republican nominee in the newly configured district.
Remaining competitive race
Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL) faced a closer contest in Florida’s 9th District, where Republican Dan Green, a Navy veteran and former Trump administration appointee, trailed Soto 50% to 50%, with 96% of the vote counted.
Background on redistricting efforts
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and state Republicans advanced a mid-decade redistricting plan in early 2026, seeking to create four additional GOP-leaning congressional districts. The effort was designed to bolster the Republican majority in the U.S. House, where the party holds an ultra-slim advantage. The new district lines were approved by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by DeSantis.
The redistricting changes affected multiple districts, including those held by Moskowitz and Castor, who were forced to run in newly drawn seats. Despite the altered boundaries, all three Democratic incumbents and the Democratic challenger in the 22nd District prevailed in their races.
Election results and district changes
The three Democratic victories occurred in districts that had been redrawn to favor Republican candidates. The 25th District, which Moskowitz won, runs along the coast from Boca Raton to Miami Beach. The 14th District, represented by Castor, and the 22nd District, where Dandiya won, were also reshaped as part of the redistricting effort. The Associated Press, New York Times, and CNN called the races based on their projections of the final vote tallies.
The outcome leaves Rep. Darren Soto’s race in the 9th District as the only remaining competitive contest in Florida’s congressional delegation, with Green narrowly trailing Soto as vote counting continued.
