JetBlue has raised its checked-baggage fees for the second time this year, with new rates taking effect for tickets purchased on or after November 3. The airline now charges a minimum of $50 each way for a first checked bag on most economy flights within the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean, up from the previous rate of $39.
The fee increases further during peak travel periods, including Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. Passengers who add a bag at least 24 hours before departure will pay $55 for the first checked bag, while those waiting until the final day will face $60 during off-peak periods and $70 during peak periods. A second checked bag now starts at $70 each way during off-peak periods and $75 during peak travel, with airport check-in fees potentially reaching $85 for a second bag.
JetBlue attributed the changes to rising operating costs, particularly elevated jet fuel prices, which have remained high since late February. The airline stated that the adjustments help offset these costs while keeping base fares competitive. Customers with eligible co-branded credit cards or certain loyalty memberships continue to check bags at no charge.
The airline previously raised baggage fees in March, a move that contributed to broader increases across major U.S. carriers, including Delta, United, American, and Southwest. At the start of 2024, the first checked bag on most domestic economy JetBlue flights cost $35 during off-peak periods, but fuel price volatility following geopolitical events led to subsequent adjustments.
Jet fuel prices have remained elevated due to ongoing disruptions in global oil supply routes, including restrictions through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane. The airline has not indicated further fee increases but has not ruled out future adjustments if operating costs continue to rise.
