Victor Wembanyama delivered a performance for the ages on Wednesday night, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 112-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The 7-foot-4 rookie recorded 52 points and 24 rebounds, both career highs, along with eight blocks to secure the win.
Wembanyama became the first player in NBA history to achieve 50 points and 20 rebounds in a one-point victory since Wilt Chamberlain in 1964. His stat line also included 16-of-28 shooting from the field, including seven dunks, and 19-of-23 free throws. The Spurs improved to 6-0 on their current homestand, having not lost since opening the season with two consecutive defeats.
The performance marked the ninth time in NBA history a player recorded at least 50 points and 20 rebounds in a game, and the first since Luka Dončić accomplished the feat in 2022. Wembanyama is just the third player to reach those benchmarks with five or more blocks in a game, joining Chamberlain and Bob McAdoo. His eight blocks also set a new NBA record for the most in any 50-point performance since the league began tracking blocks officially in 1973-74.
First-half dominance sets record
Wembanyama’s impact was most pronounced in the first half, where he posted 29 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks. This made him the first player since the NBA’s play-by-play era began in 1996-97 to record at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks in a single half.
Despite his individual brilliance, Wembanyama acknowledged room for improvement. “My shots weren’t falling tonight and that forces me into a style of play that is exhausting,” he said. “I can do it. The proof is here. I can do it, but I can be much better if my shots fall. I know it’s just a matter of time.”
Spurs sustain momentum under adversity
The Spurs have won six consecutive games, including a three-game homestand sweep. Wembanyama noted he had been battling illness, stating, “I haven’t been feeling great lately. I’ve been sick for a while, and today I felt like I had to push through.”
San Antonio’s defense also played a pivotal role, with Wembanyama’s eight blocks contributing to a game where Dallas managed just 111 points despite strong performances from Luka Dončić and Cooper Flagg. The victory extended the Spurs’ unbeaten streak to six games, dating back to their season-opening losses to Oklahoma City and Houston.
