Matt Damon revealed that his wife, Luciana “Lucy” Barroso, underwent brain surgery just a week before the 2024 Oscars after suffering a brain aneurysm. Despite her recent medical procedure, Barroso made a surprise decision to attend an Oscars afterparty with Damon, marking a contrast to a 2007 Oscars night when Damon missed the celebrations due to a prior commitment.
Barroso’s recovery and surprise appearance
In an interview with GQ, Damon described the medical scare as a "whole scary thing" and noted that Barroso had surgery the week before the Oscars. He stated that she was the first night she felt well enough to get up and regain her energy. "She surprised me and got a dress, and we went out to the after-party," Damon said. "She remembered that the last time it happened, I didn’t do it. And she was like, ‘This time we’re going out.’"
Damon characterized her decision as "pretty f---ing heroic" and meaningful, emphasizing the emotional significance of her actions. The couple has been married for nearly 21 years and share four daughters.
Damon reflects on missed 2007 Oscars opportunity
Damon also recounted a moment from the 79th Academy Awards in 2007, when The Departed—starring Damon—won Best Picture. At the time, Damon was filming The Bourne Ultimatum in Miami with Barroso and their infant daughter. He watched the ceremony from bed and later regretted missing the celebrations.
"I was jumping up and down in the bedroom, and I realized in that moment I hadn’t even considered that that could happen," Damon said. "And I turned to Lucy and I was like, ‘S---, we should be there!’ ... I totally blew it."
Oppenheimer’s 2024 Oscars win and Barroso’s role
In 2024, Damon starred in Oppenheimer, which won Best Picture at the Oscars. Barroso’s recovery allowed her to attend the afterparty, fulfilling her earlier promise to ensure Damon did not miss another major Hollywood moment. Damon’s remarks highlight the personal significance of the event for both of them.
