Los Angeles Rams safety Quentin Lake mocked Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert on the St. Brown Podcast following a Week 8 victory, describing Herbert’s passes as akin to “throwing deli meat out there” and claiming Herbert was “seeing ghosts.”
Lake intercepted Herbert once during the Rams’ 24-9 win at SoFi Stadium, returning the pick 45 yards to set up a field goal. Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie also intercepted Herbert in the third quarter, returning it 26 yards to the Chargers’ 22-yard line. The interceptions marked Herbert’s 10th pick of the season, leading the NFL through seven games.
Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and head coach Jim Harbaugh responded to Lake’s remarks on Thursday. McDaniel stated, “People are saying whatever they want with whatever facts they have when we're not living up to expectations.” Harbaugh added, “As far as anyone's opinion, I don't see that. Everybody's entitled to their opinion.”
Herbert has not addressed Lake’s comments publicly. When asked about the remarks, he replied, “I haven’t looked into it. I haven’t heard anything about it, so I can’t make a comment about it.”
The Chargers, now 0-7, have scored zero touchdowns in consecutive games and rank last in the NFL with a 32.6 QBR. Their offense averages 14.1 points per game, the lowest in the league. Herbert’s interception total leads the NFL, and he has thrown at least one pick in every game this season.
The Chargers face the Houston Texans in Week 9, seeking their first win of the year.
