Bill Belichick has advanced to the next stage of the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection process, joining four other coaches as finalists for the Class of 2027. The announcement on Thursday confirmed that Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves, and Mike Shanahan will be considered by the Coach Subcommittee in a virtual meeting on November 17.
The subcommittee will select one candidate from the five to be presented to the full Selection Committee for potential induction. Belichick, who was not elected in his first year of eligibility for the Class of 2026, remains in contention for the Hall of Fame after compiling a historic coaching resume.
Belichick’s career includes six Super Bowl championships as head coach of the New England Patriots, the most in NFL history, and two additional titles as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. He ranks second all-time in regular-season wins by a head coach with 333 victories, including a league-record 31 postseason wins. Over his 24 seasons with the Patriots, New England won 17 AFC East titles and reached nine Super Bowls.
The Hall of Fame also announced a revised selection system in September, reducing the committee from 50 members to 28, with 25 voting participants and three nonvoting members. The annual selection meeting will return to an in-person format this year.
Belichick, currently serving as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, has not publicly commented on his Hall of Fame status beyond acknowledging the process. In a May interview with Hang Out with Sean Hannity, he stated, “You’d have to ask the voters. I didn’t have a say in it.”
The final decision for the Class of 2027 will be made by the full Selection Committee in early 2025, with the induction ceremony scheduled for August 2027 in Canton, Ohio.
