Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett is expected to return to action Sunday when the Rams face the Washington Commanders, head coach Sean McVay confirmed Friday. Garrett, a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, has not played since the season opener on September 8, when he recorded no tackles in a 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia.
Garrett underwent surgery on his left knee following the defeat and was placed on injured reserve. He resumed limited practice this week after opening his 21-day practice window, with McVay describing his progress as encouraging. Tight end Terrance Ferguson and running back Ronnie Rivers are also on track to be activated from injured reserve for the same game.
The Rams (4-4) enter the matchup on a two-game winning streak, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 35-21 and the Los Angeles Chargers 24-9 in their previous contests. Sunday’s game will mark the first time Garrett and veteran defensive tackle Aaron Donald play together. Donald, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, returned from retirement in October after the Rams traded for Garrett in a multi-pick deal that sent edge rusher Jared Verse and future draft selections to Cleveland.
McVay emphasized Garrett’s readiness, stating, “He’s looked awesome in practice and I’m excited for him to just go play within himself.” The coach added that Garrett does not need to alter his approach, saying, “Doesn’t have to do anything other than be Myles.” Garrett holds the NFL single-season sack record with 23 from last year.
The Rams’ defensive front has struggled without Garrett, with Donald yet to replicate his usual impact and defensive end Byron Young leading the team with 4.5 sacks. Defensive tackle Kobie Turner remains on injured reserve with a groin injury. Garrett’s return is anticipated to bolster a pass rush that has underperformed relative to expectations this season.
