Brandon Aiyuk returned to the San Francisco 49ers facility on Friday, marking a notable development in a long-standing contractual dispute between the wide receiver and the organization.
Aiyuk’s reinstatement request and NFL’s financial condition
Aiyuk submitted paperwork to the NFL requesting reinstatement after the 49ers placed him on the reserve/left squad list late last season. The NFL informed Aiyuk that he must repay $13 million in previously received bonuses to be reinstated, according to reports. Aiyuk has not played in an NFL game since suffering a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus injury in October 2024.
49ers’ leadership responds to Aiyuk’s return
Upon Aiyuk’s return to the team facility, head coach Kyle Shanahan publicly stated his indifference to the situation. "I could care less," Shanahan said when asked about a potential meeting with Aiyuk and team brass. "It’s been over for our football team for a long time." Shanahan added that the matter is "not too big of a deal" for him to address.
General manager John Lynch previously indicated that the 49ers do not expect Aiyuk to play for the team again. The 49ers voided the remaining guaranteed money owed to Aiyuk on his extension after he did not participate in rehab sessions following his injury.
Aiyuk’s status and career trajectory
Aiyuk remains under contract with the 49ers pending NFL reinstatement. He tallied 24 catches for 374 yards in the 2024 season before his injury and recorded 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023, helping the 49ers reach the Super Bowl.
The 49ers, currently holding a 6-1 record ahead of their Week 9 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, have moved forward without Aiyuk’s involvement. The team suffered its lone loss of the season in Week 7 to the Atlanta Falcons before entering a bye week.
