Two hikers rescued from England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, after a seven-hour operation in treacherous winter conditions left their £130 hotel bill unpaid, according to the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT). The men, who were given a 35% discount on their room at the Wasdale Head Inn, did not settle the bill despite agreeing to pay at the time. The rescue team reimbursed the inn to maintain goodwill with local businesses. Meanwhile, public donations have exceeded £38,000, covering the bill and supporting the team’s annual operational costs, which exceed £100,000. The hikers also reportedly took two flashlights from the rescue team and provided a non-working phone number for contact. The rescue team described the situation as 'avoidable' and expressed disappointment in the hikers' lack of gratitude and follow-up.
