The FBI has issued a warning about the growing use of artificial intelligence in romance scams, particularly as Valentine’s Day approaches. Scammers are leveraging AI to create realistic photos, videos, and voice messages, making it easier to deceive victims into trusting fake online personas. The bureau reported that romance scams resulted in $672 million in losses nationwide in 2024, with over 17,000 victims reporting fraud. In San Francisco alone, victims lost $40 million last year.
Scammers often pose as professionals in the construction industry and claim to be based outside the U.S., according to the FBI. They use AI-generated content to build relationships quickly, then manipulate victims into sending money for travel, medical emergencies, or other fabricated needs. Officials emphasize that many cases go unreported, suggesting the actual financial impact may be even higher.
The FBI advises caution when engaging with strangers online, particularly on dating apps and social media. Victims are urged to verify identities and avoid sending money or personal information to individuals they have not met in person.
