Bo Bichette, who signed a three-year, $126 million deal with the New York Mets in the offseason, has faced early criticism from fans after a slow start to the 2026 season. The two-time All-Star went 1-for-14 in the opening series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, leading the National League with eight strikeouts in his first three games. Despite the Mets winning two of three games, Bichette heard boos from fans at Citi Field on Sunday.
"If anything, I thought it took too long," Bichette said. "I thought my at-bats were terrible, too." He also acknowledged the pressure of performing in New York, admitting he felt the need to deliver a signature moment for his teammates and fans.
Bichette is adjusting to a new position, transitioning from shortstop to third base after seven years with the Toronto Blue Jays. He has made four putouts and one error at third base so far. The Mets begin a seven-game road trip starting with the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.
Bichette has had success at Busch Stadium in the past, posting a .351/.375/.408 slash line in eight career games there. However, he has struggled at Oracle Park, going hitless in five at-bats across two games.
